Mousekin's Golden House is a wonderful children’s story. It is about a jack o’latern that has been placed in a field after Halloween. When a mouse called Mousekin finds it, she makes it her own. Throughout the story the reader gets to see as the mouse prepares a nest in the o’latern and then settling in. When the winter comes, the pumpkin begins to settle, the cutout mouth sags to a close, the insides get mushy and finally the pumpkin is a snug haven from the falling snow for the mouse.
This would be a great book to read with your child and then develop your own plan as to how the pumpkins can be reused. Could you use it as compost? Take it to the woods for animals to use? It might be fun to make a flow chart of your plan or just illustrate it.
