Crafts for Kids- Snowflake Mobile

Snowflake Mobile

JDaniel pointed out that the flag mobile his room really needed to come down and he would need a new one made to take its place. We discussed the variety of theme the new mobile could have. I really thought it should have a snowflake theme. JDaniel has been hoping and praying for snow since the end of November and we have only gotten freezing rain.

Why not give him his own falling snow mobile in his room? He could wake up to snowflakes dancing from beneath his ceiling fan every morning.
I gathered the following materials to make glistening snowflakes to hang from a clothes hanger.

  • 1/4 cup of salt
  • 1 cup white paint
  • 1/4 cup of glue
  • paintbrushes
  • pre-cut paper plate snowflakes created by me
  • newspaper
  • plastic coat hanger
  • fishing line
We mixed the salt, paint, and glue together in an old jelly jar (A plastic cup would have been great to use too. ) The salt add a glittery effect and the glue hold the salt in place.

Then we both painted the mixture onto the paper plates. The salt settled at the bottom of the jar so, we had to stir the mixture up a few times with our brushes. If you try this at home, you probably will too.
JDaniel liked to add one thin line of paint onto each leg or section of the snowflake. I dabbed it everywhere. Once we figured out that is what we were doing. He added lines to all the snowflakes and I dapped a little extra paint into the areas deemed not line sections.

After the paint had dried on one side of the snowflake, we repeated the process on the backside of them. We mixed a little blue paint into the mixture before we painted the back on the snowflake. I thought it would look pretty.

When both sides of the snowflakes had dried, we used a hole punch to put a hole in each one. I threaded fishing line through the holes and hung the snowflakes from a plastic coat hanger.

I took the picture at the top of this post in our kitchen. JDaniel's room doesn't have the best light in it so, I took the picture in the kitchen and then moved the snowflake mobile to his room.  He loves having huge flakes falling in his room.
