The weather here in South Carolina has been cold lately and it inspired me to have JDaniel start mornings with oatmeal. Oatmeal just plain really isn't something I thought he would be interested in so I decided to come up with a variety of oatmeal toppings and recipes he could use to create interesting oatmeal dishes.
Oatmeal + Natural Applesauce + Cashew and Almonds
( These should be chopped. I left them whole so he could see that they are the nuts he likes.)
Oatmeal + Bananas+ Chocolate Syrup
Oatmeal + Nuts+ Apples
Oatmeal + Peaches + Ginger
Oatmeal + Bananas+ Pineapple + Coconut
Oatmeal +Plain Yogurt + Grape Jelly
Oatmeal + Pumpkin + Pumpkin Pie Spice
Oatmeal + Raisins + Brown Sugar
Oatmeal + Raspberry Yogurt + Raisins

I always make my son's oaeal for him. It never occurred to me to let him mix in his own toppings. Will definitely be trying this tomorrow
ReplyDeleteI've been off oatmeal for a while, but when I ate it frequently I did chia seeds, flax seeds, peanut butter, and a few dark chocolate chips in mine :-)
ReplyDeleteSounds great!
ReplyDeleteWe usually just do various combinations of fruit (fresh and dried), and sometimes a bit of cinnamon (depending on which fruit it is).
ReplyDeleteButter and a pinch of salt. I am missing that sweet tooth everyone else seems to have. Actually, usually we do oatmeal just plain!
ReplyDeleteSure beats the brown sugar and cinnamon my kids love and always ask if I added. I may have to see if any of these ideas appeal to them. ;) Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWe usually do plain oatmeal, but sometimes add maple syrop and brown sugar. I've been meaning to try some toppings with the kids as I think then even my non-oatmeal-eaters might give it a try.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try the pumpkin one. That sounds like that will be very tasty! My favorite oatmeal is cut up apples with cinnamon and caramel drizzled over the top. My youngest daughter loves banana, toffee coated sliced almonds and chocolate chips. My oldest daughter gags at the sight of it. She has texture issues ;-)
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have been able to think of so many ideas. They all look delicious. I've only tried maple and brown sugar so far.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. Brad is like that too...loves to come up with fun experiments (cooking wise). I know he would have fun with the options you came up with! Hope you had a great weekend! :)
ReplyDeleteYum I think I want oatmeal now!
ReplyDeleteWe always have oatmeal with brown sugar, cinnamon and raisins. I have got to try some of those other combinations. This week we did a make your own English Muffin Pizza tin, where the girls topped their pizzas. I think some time this week I will use the muffin tins to let them top their oatmeal. Thanks for the great ideas.
ReplyDeleteWhen 'Timan' was very little I just grated an apple into the oatmeal, he loved it. You have some great ideas, guess I need to 'reintroduce' the good old oatmeal again. The tot is into pb&j right now.
ReplyDeleteGreat mix-in ideas! Perhaps some of your suggestions will renew Allison's love of oatmeal.
ReplyDeleteWalnuts and a little brown sugar.
ReplyDelete=)
Alex's favorite breakfast is Patriot Oatmeal - bananas, strawberries and blueberries for red white and blue. Plus brown sugar if course.
ReplyDeleteMy toddler loves oatmeal. She even wakes up in the middle of the night asking for it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great ideas! My little one loves oatmeal. This should be very helpful in shaking these up!
ReplyDeleteI wish I liked oatmeal. When I was a kid my mom Cream of Wheat and I liked it, but I've just never been an oatmeal eater. I love all of your toppings for your son.
ReplyDeletelove the mix in ideas. my hunter says oatmeal is baby food. ha! the texture gets him. so these ideas may help get him over the baby food texture hurdle. : )
ReplyDeleteJust stopping by again to let you know I tagged you

Yum! There a few ideas in there I hadn't thought to do :-)
ReplyDeleteYum! My son doesn't want me to cook his oatmeal. He wants to just eat the oats plain. Weird. maybe if I convince him to add some toppings he will enjoy cooking it. It would be a lot less mess than the uncooked oats.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great variety! My son does not like oatmeal. I think I will try it again with a few of your oatmeal combos.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter loves preparing her own oatmeal!! I would bring it all to her on a tray with all the little dishes of things to pour in, and then she would stir it! We did raisins, chopped apples, a splash of milk, brown sugar, and cinnamon. She loves it!
ReplyDeleteI don't eat much oatmeal, but my adult daughter loves it. I know she would like some of these toppings. It's great that you're giving JDaniel the opportunity to experiment and choose his own toppings! Deb @ LivingMontessoriNow.com
ReplyDeleteShared this on facebook and our readers LOVED it! What great suggestions! You got me to eat oatmeal 2 times this week =)
ReplyDeleteYum ideas :) We also love frozen raspberries with brown sugar!
ReplyDeleteWow! I love all of the different ideas that you came up with! I'm going to add a link to this post in my cereal alternatives list! Thanks for linking up at Food Adventure Friday.
ReplyDeleteThis is great! Would you please share this with our readers for Fun Stuff Fridays? http://www.toysinthedryer.com/2012/01/fun-stuff-fridays-6.html
