Finding the Topper for Your Tree

This is the first year we have done a full size tree for Christmas. In previous years we have done small tabletop trees that JDaniel couldn't topple. I wrote about last year's tree in a post called Maybe This Tree Will Grow Next Year.

JDaniel was super excited about selecting a tree. We visited several stores to find just the right one. He lobbied hard for a bright blue tree, but we ended up settling on a traditional green one.

After setting up the tree, we hung up some of our non-breakable ornaments along with the ones we have made while doing the Truth in the Tinsel  curriculum and some homemade ornaments.

The tree was missing something. It needed something on top of the tree. We hadn't looked for a star, dove, or angel while looking for the tree so, we had to head out again to find a tree topper.

JDaniel fell hard for a multicolored star that lit up and since I hadn't given on the blue tree. I went with the star he picked out. When we brought it home and tried it on the tree, the top of the tree began to lean toward the floor and star decided to not stay stationary on top of tree.

JDaniel was so disappointed. He really loved the star, but it had to go back in the box.

I decided to create a game out of our star search by having him search for things around the house we could use on top of tree. It was raining that afternoon and cold I really didn't want to head out and start the tree topper search again.

He came back within ten minutes with a box loaded with things for us to try.

We tried:

 A Playsckool Man

A Rocket

A Sippy Cup

A Chenille Worm

AWrench

A Fireman's Hat

None of these really fit well with the rest of the tree.

A few days later we headed to Walmart and found the perfect star. My husband and I love it. JDaniel would still like to keep trying.

What is on top of your tree?

  3. What a great idea to have JDaniel look around the house for a tree topper. It gave you time to find a star. :))

  7. Such a cute story!

We have an angel on top of our tree that we've had almost since we were married. We are very sentimental about it at this point.

    =)

  12. So much fun!

We have had a lighted, gold star for the past several years. I had an angel before but when Devin (my oldest) was little he told me one year he wanted a star. I searched high and low for that thing and was so happy when I finally found the perfect one!

  14. Our topper changes, our star is just too big and heavy this year, so a paper star will have to do...and I have a delightful froggie man dressed in a little red sweater, leaning just below the top...he's standing quite tall and watching over all....A handmade star is always charming, when done by little hands...!

  16. Have to love the imagination of a child! ...We have an angel on our tree.

  17. What a great story. I'm so glad that you made it a game for him. Lots of parents would have just made the "executive" decision and that would be that. Good for you for including him in the process. And I love the things he chose even if you did end up with something that you and your husband picked..

  18. The only glass on my tree this year is the topper. It was my grandmothers. It's hard to describe - kind of dual globes of blown glass with a point at the top. Very pretty.

I was fond of JDaniel's wrench.

  19. The Sippy cup lights up quite nicely actually.

We have a star my mom gave me years ago. It now irks her she didn't give me an angel.

  20. We have a sparkling star on our tree...no lights though. Sounds like you guys had fun picking one out!

  24. You are truly a fun and inspired mom. We have a simple gold star on top of our tree. Would love to see a picture of what you ended up choosing.

  25. Ha! I love it. Personally I vote for the sippy cup. We have so many of those around here that I would be glad to discover a way to multipurpose them once my kids have outgrown them. :)

  26. I have no idea, because it will be a surprise, we will celebrate in Amsterdam together with our son and family and for the first time Toby 13 months old ! Apparently he is very interested in the tree, my son has rented one (they do it in Holland and when you don't need it anymore they take it back and plant it in again) It's 2 m (6.6)high ! must be very heavy with the pot and the earth ! Love the Daniel's choices, lol !

  27. Love the creativity in the different choices ~ very sweet and will be a great memory for your little one when he's older.

  28. So cute! I think I like the rocket the best. What a creative little guy!

  29. We have this Old Navy dog dressed up in an angel's costume. I have been trying to find something to replace it for a while. I think you had a good idea! I'm going to send my girls in search of something around the house until I find just the right thing!

  30. LOL - I love ALL the tree toppings. As a homegrown Kentuckian (Go CATS!) - A bright blue tree would have probably gone over pretty well! Wishing you and yours a very MERRY CHRISTMAS Season!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. That is just such a fun thing to have done with him!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh! And what don't you like about a blue tree? JDaniel is so clever finding all those treetoppers... (And we have no tree.)

  33. I think my favorite is the fireman hat! I love all of the pics!

  34. Precious ornaments, to live a delicious Christmas surrounded by color and joy.

    ReplyDelete
  35. We made a star of David with a nativity scene on it. An ornament directly below it has our family's names on it. It works. It's not some fantastical star or angel, but for us, it does illustrate the meaning of Christmas.

  36. I vote for the sippy cup!

We have always had a star on our tree(s)

Still enjoying Truth in the Tinsel, however sometimes we have to play catch-up!

  37. Clever tree toppers. We use the traditional angel or star. But your suggestions are making me re-think that!

    ReplyDelete
  38. My personal favorite is the sippy cup. I love the way the light shines through it!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I like the fire hat. :)

My son wanted a star once, but the ones we found had no way to attach to the tree. So we've gone without or made paper plate angels. Then it happened: I've had a little knit hat for years - just a couple of inches tall - that has a pom-pom on top. One year, I put that on just to put it somewhere, and it stayed. Now, it's become our tree topper - as the boys say, it keeps the tree warm.

Just keep looking - you'll eventually get the perfect one, even if it's not traditional!

  40. That is SOOOOOOO cute...I'm sure he had a blast searching for the perfect tree topper! {The sippy cup is my favorite!}

    ReplyDelete
  41. It is so precious that he found so many "interesting" things to put on the top of the tree. What a fun way to spend a rainy afternoon!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Haha! Your sippy cup topper made me laugh out loud. You just needed to finish by hanging some bottle nipples on the branches and you'd be all set. ;)

We have an LED star on top of our tree. I think it's a little cheesy, but my 10-month old was mesmerized the first time he saw it. He sat on the floor for a few minutes staring up at it. Anything that makes a kid that age sit still for any length of time is a winner in my book.

  43. We have a star which sounds like the one that didn't work for you (of course, we have a "fake tree," due to allergies.) I love all of his creative toppers! What fun!!

  44. I love that you challenged your son to find something for the top of the tree...what an awesome exercise!

And this reminds me of a book we've been reading, How the Rabbits Found Christmas. The little rabbits discover the idea behind the Christmas tree, but they just need something to top it. They wait and think, and finally the evening star shines right behind it.

It's one I had as a child, and I remember reading it with my mom. My girls are loving it this season. :)

  45. Wrench gets my vote any day! We are old fashioned-star.

    ReplyDelete
  46. We're pretty traditional I guess. We have an angel on the top made by Madame Alexander.

You got me to thinking and I believe growing up we had an angel too.

    ReplyDelete
  47. So cute! He's such a little boy. And we need a new topper--our is an ancient Santa from Target. His head falls off every year....

    ReplyDelete
  48. LOL I love this! Sadly we don't have one either! I keep saying every year I am going to get one but I can never find the perfect one. I want to get a big pretty bow or something. Maybe next year :)

  49. I'm totally digging the wrench!

    What a fabulously fun post!

    Thanks for sharing the smile!

    A+
