Yearning for the Beach

Playing in the sand is one of JDaniel's favorite things. My mom gave him a huge bad filled with toys to take to the beach last summer. He had the best time scooping up sand with his plastic shovel and depositing it into a pail. Minutes of enjoyment turned into hours of fun repeating the process over and over again.
In early January we went to play at a local playground and JDaniel noticed the volleyball pit. "That would be a great place for sand toys!" he declared. I whole heartedly agreed. It really was ideal. The pit was filled with wonderfully soft beach sand and no one would care if we played in it in the dead of winter.

The next time we went to the park we brought his beach toys with us. JDaniel had a blast. We tried to build sand castles but, the sand wasn't wet enough. Deep hole digging and sand sifting were a success. He loved getting to have the sand slip through his finger. It was a wonderful way to spend a winter morning.

What about summer do you yearn for?

  1. Very fun!!! Sammy is just now starting to love the sand and building castles and all that. My parents live on a lake that has several "beaches" around it. One is a short little walk. Once we get a warmer day we will be heading over there to play in the sand!

  2. My girls could spend HOURS and HOURS playing in the sand as little ones....truth be told, theyy would still do it if given the chance. (they are 15 & 17)

ps. Summer is already here in Florida.

  5. Too funny - my scheduled post for Friday is also about the beach (Assateague). Very creative to use the volleyball court!

  12. I'm really looking forward to taking our boys to the beach this summer. I don't work weekends anymore so our family time has been greatly increased! I especially can't wait to play with my two year old at the beach because he is so expressive and I can't wait to see how he reacts to it.

  14. I'm yearning for warmer weather too, and favorite part about it is the sun, the beach, and the water park!

  16. I'm yearning for beach weather too! Isn't it great when repeating the same task is fun for hours?!

  17. Well, summer is a long, long way away yet where we are, but the beach would be top priority once it does (hopefully) arrive. So true that a child needs nothing more than a bucket and spade and lots and lots of sand.
Of course, the sand all over the house afterwards isn't quite so appealing, but .... it's still all worthwhile, isn't it.

  18. Oh... it snowed in Ohio today ... I am yearning for a beach too .... cute tale

  19. I agree with the fruit and fresh veggies from my garden, but the sand, sun and surf are number one. Might just have to go take a sniff off some suntan lotion.

I'm yearning for the feel of sun on my head. It's been over a week since we last saw a sunbeam and I'd like to tilt my face upwards and close my eyes and feel warm!

  36. Good for you and JD....finding a place in the winter for summer fun. Just think, he's already familiar with a volleyball court, and he's got a head start on the game of volleyball...another fantastic year round sport, but especially fun to play in the sand.

I enjoyed Jenny's Pause Life Post! Excellent A+ advice. Thanks for sharing!

  37. Absolutely the beach!! I grew up and raised my kids near the beach. Now I am land locked. I miss the sounds of crashing waves and the smells of the sea. I loved going crabbing with a chicken leg and sting. Then having gumbo and crab stew if they were to small. Ooo an over night sleep on the beach with a fire, Yup so many things I could list about how I miss the beach!!

  43. The best part of Florida was being able to hit the beach year round while my babes were tots. JDaniel looks like a very happy camper.

  44. Sweet! I'm like JDaniel. I yearn for the beach anytime of the year. And ocean that is warm enough for me to swim in.

  45. I definitely yearn for warmer weather, but summer, I dunno. It tends to get too hot for me. I wish it would stay comfortable like spring brings, but I know that can't be. Oh bother!

Thanks for sharing some love by visiting my blog today. Have a lovely evening!

  63. I love this.

What a perfect stop on our little journey through Alphabe-Thursday's letter "Y".

I always kept a plastic sack full of sand toys in the car when I used to babysit all three Grands. They would spend hours playing in the sand at the playground. Oh, those are wonderful memories.

    Thank you.

    A+
