Brainy Baby DVD Review and Giveaway

I was sent two Brainy Baby DVDs. The Shapes and Colors DVD called Rainbows and Circles and Squares- Oh my! was the one JDaniel and I previewed. I was also sent the music DVD that will I will be giving away to one of you.

Let me tell you about the DVD we watched. When it first started it reminded me a lot of the Baby Einstein DVDS. There are children, toys, and music tied to the skill the DVD was trying to teach. In this case the skill was shapes and colors. The video is different in many ways from Baby Einstein videos.

Let’s start with the music! Each shape and color has be different type of music. There was classical, jazz, and big band music to name a few.

The presentation of shapes is a little different too. I liked how the used concrete objects as well as animated ones to teach the shapes. The video shows each shape being painted onto the screen. JDaniel liked watching the shapes appear. The shapes are divided into two groups. The circle, square, rectangle, triangle, heart and star are presented first. (I don’t think that a heart and a star are primary shapes. I never even taught them as shapes when I taught school. That is just a pet peeve for me about many of the books and videos that teach shapes.) Then the DVD moves onto diamonds, octagons, and pentagons. I was glad to see the other shapes introduced.

The section on colors was fun too. Again they used real objects along with animated ones. I really like that the real objects are not all toys that I can get information about on their web site like some other DVDs for children do. Children are given information and asked questions about the colors that are presented. I was pleased to find that they were the same questions I would have asked JDaniel.

Both the shape and color segments have review quizzes at the end. I wish they had a little longer wait time before giving the answers. The reviews are well done though.
